Victoria through his Masses

A survey of Tomás Luis de Victoria through his mass settings

6 – 12 August 2018 Ávila, Spain

Esta página en español

This course will explore mass settings by Victoria (1548 – 1611) a form used throughout his career starting in the 1570’s in Rome returning to Spain at the end of the 1580’s to spend his last years in Madrid in the service of the Empress María, having a richly endowed chapel where he could experiment with the changing styles of polyphony.

Tomás Luis de Victoria  began his musical life as a choirboy in Ávila’s Cathedral, and this will be just one of the places we shall sing his music, also visiting other important churches in his home city.
