The Spanish Golden Age

Course director Rupert Damerell

The Zenobia Summer Course in Ávila is an extremely enriching event that attracts singers from all over the world. This course is a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of Renaissance sacred music from the 15th and 16th centuries in Spain. During the course, participants have the opportunity to study and perform masterpieces by prominent composers such as Morales, Victoria, Vivanco, Guerrero and many others.

Aimed at singers with experience but who may be new to performing Renaissance polyphony, the course provides the tools necessary to explore the repertoire in depth and develop the technical skills necessary for authentic interpretation.

In addition to delving into the repertoire, the course also focuses on the study of how music works and the specific techniques for singing it. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about polyphonic structure, proper breathing techniques, accurate intonation, and other skills fundamental to successful performance of Renaissance music.

The historic enclave of Ávila, with its rich artistic and musical tradition, offers an ideal setting for the Zenobia Summer Course. Participants will be immersed in an inspiring environment as they explore Renaissance sacred music in its original context.

It doesn’t matter if you are a professional or a singing student, the Zenobia Summer Course provides you with a unique experience to expand your knowledge and skills in a stimulating and collaborative environment. Immerse yourself in the beauty and sophistication of Renaissance sacred music and discover the pleasure of performing it authentically. Don’t miss this unique opportunity for artistic and musical growth!

We will visit the places where Saint Teresa, Saint John of the Cross, Tomás Luis de Victoria, Cristóbal de Morales or the Grand Inquisitor Torquemada once lived, and we will enjoy a final performance in one of the historic churches of Ávila. This tour will take us through the rich cultural and historical legacy of Ávila, one of the most fascinating cities in Spain.
